The Ultimate Guide to Buying a Winter Wetsuit

The Ultimate Guide to Buying a Winter Wetsuit

Embrace the Cold with Confidence

As the summer warmth fades and September gives way to October, it’s time to gear up for cooler waters. At Circle One, we’ve got you covered with our comprehensive guide to choosing the perfect winter wetsuit and neoprene accessories to keep you warm and comfortable.

Why a Winter Wetsuit?

Winter wetsuits are crucial for staying warm in cold water and windy conditions. Typically, winter wetsuits come in thicknesses of 5/4/3mm or more, with a 4/3mm suit being ideal for spring and autumn. These wetsuits trap a layer of water between your skin and the neoprene, which your body then heats up to create a warm insulating layer. A snug fit is essential to keep the warm water in and the cold water out. Make sure to try on your wetsuit or use our size guides to ensure the perfect fit.

Choosing the Right Thickness

The thickness of your wetsuit should be based on the water temperature you’ll be swimming or surfing in. Here’s our general guidance:

  • 5/3mm Full Length: Ideal for UK winter conditions, especially with glued and blindstitched or full liquid seam construction for maximum warmth.
  • 4/3mm Full Length: Suitable for those who get hot easily, providing a good balance between warmth and flexibility.

For watersports like kitesurfing, sailing, or windsurfing, consider additional features like a barrier system or hydrophobic chest and back panels to cut wind chill.

For open water swimming, opt for wetsuits made from smoother neoprene fabrics to reduce drag. These suits come in various thicknesses, from 2-3mm for summer/autumn to 5mm for year-round swimming in colder waters.

Entry Systems: Back Zip, Chest Zip, or Zipless?

Back Zip

  • Traditional with the largest opening
  • Easiest to get on and off
  • Less flexible around the back and can let in more water

Chest Zip and Zipless

  • Smaller opening, better seal
  • Warmer and more flexible
  • Zipless offers the best comfort with no points of friction

Wetsuit Seams & Stitching

Seam construction is vital for the performance and durability of a wetsuit. Here are the 3 main types:

Flatlock Stitching

  • Creates a flat seam with zigzag stitching
  • Flexible but allows water through
  • Best for summer wetsuits

Glued & Blindstitched Seams

  • Neoprene panels are glued then stitched halfway through
  • Minimal water ingress
  • Warm and durable

Full Liquid Seal

  • 100% watertight with rubber applied to both sides of seams
  • Most flexible and strong
  • Ideal for maximum warmth and durability

For winter wetsuits, we recommend at least glued and blindstitched seams. Full liquid seals provide extra warmth and durability, preventing any cold water from entering.

Essential Winter Accessories

Boots, Gloves & Hoods

For all-year-round surfing, protect your extremities with:

  • 5mm Wetsuit Boots: Keep feet warm; ensure a snug fit.
  • Wetsuit Gloves: Well-fitting gloves to retain warmth.
  • Wetsuit Hood/Cap: Essential for cold water to prevent heat loss.

Alternative Options

  • Wetsuit Socks: For better proprioception and board feel if boots feel restrictive.
