The Essential Guide to Buying a Summer Wetsuit
As sea temperatures rise and summer gets into full swing, the right wetsuit can make all the difference between a short dip and a full day of watersports. Whether you’re surfing, bodyboarding or just swimming with the kids, a well-fitting summer wetsuit will keep you comfortable, protected, and in the water longer.
At Circle One, we’ve been designing and supplying quality wetsuits for over 50 years. Here’s everything you need to know to choose the right summer wetsuit for adults and kids.
Why Wear a Wetsuit?
A wetsuit is essential for thermal protection, even in summer. It works by trapping a thin layer of water between your body and the neoprene. Your body heats this water, creating insulation against the cooler sea temperature.
Neoprene also adds buoyancy and physical protection—minimising scrapes, bumps, and UV exposure. For maximum performance, a wetsuit must fit snugly to prevent cold water from flushing through

Shorty vs Full-Length Wetsuits
Full-Length Wetsuits
A full-length wetsuit covers the arms and legs entirely and provides the most warmth and protection. For summer in the UK, a 3/2mm full-length wetsuit is the most popular and versatile choice. It offers warmth without overheating, especially on windier or overcast days, or in cooler waters.
Shorty Wetsuits
Shorty wetsuits (short sleeves and legs) are ideal for warmer conditions and high-activity sports like surfing or kayaking. Variants like Long Johns (long legs, sleeveless) are great for paddling, offering excellent freedom of movement. For family beach days, shorties are a go-to choice, particularly for kids, offering all-day UV protection and ease of use.
What Thickness Wetsuit Do You Need?
Wetsuit thickness is measured in millimetres and affects both warmth and flexibility. The first number refers to the neoprene thickness at the core, while the second (and third, if present) refers to the limbs, where more flexibility is needed. For example, our 3/2mm suits are 3mm thickness across the torso and upper leg and 2mm across the arms and lower leg. This is the typical specification of the majority of summer wetsuits.
For UK summer conditions, here’s what we recommend:
3/2mm – The best all-round summer wetsuit thickness. Ideal for water temperatures 15–19°C, typical of UK coastal waters from late spring through to early autumn. A 3/2mm suit will keep most people warm without sacrificing comfort or movement.
4mm – A warmer option for those sensitive to the cold or venturing into cooler northern waters. Suitable for water temps around 12–15°C.
📌 Key takeaway: For summer, choose a 3/2mm wetsuit unless you’re regularly in cold northern waters or feel the cold more than most.
Back Zip vs Chest Zip Wetsuits
Your choice of zip entry affects both performance and ease of use:
Back Zip – Easier to get on and off. Typically more affordable and ideal for casual use or younger users. May allow more water in than chest zips.
Chest Zip – Offers a better seal against water entry and greater flexibility across the shoulders. Preferred by more experienced surfers and for higher-performance use.
Wetsuit Seams and Stitching
The way a wetsuit is constructed directly impacts its warmth and durability. Here's a quick breakdown:
Flatlock Stitching – Found in most summer wetsuits. Strong and breathable, but allows water in. Comfortable in warm conditions.
Glued and Blind Stitched (GBS) – Neoprene panels are glued and then stitched partway through, preventing water from seeping in. A key feature of premium summer wetsuits.
